Adult Swimming Lessons in Toronto
Swimming is a vital skill that we should all pursue. Learning to swim can be done through general exposure to water at a young age. However, to really master the art of swimming, you need to have swim classes. Some parents are capable of teaching their children on their own, but if you're not an expert, you should still get training from someone who is.
At Felix's swim school in Toronto, we offer program's for ages 5 to adulthood. Regardless of your age, it is never too late to learn how to swim. Before getting into all we have to offer, let me shed some light on what exactly swim classes are and why you need them!
What are Swimming Classes?
Swim classes involve individuals learning how to swim in a classroom environment. A swim class isn't specific to children as plenty of adults require lessons too. The basic concept is that a group of 5-20 children or adults share an instructor who lets them work together. You'll find that it takes many months if not years to be fully comfortable with swimming
Classes are separated into experience levels. Beginners will enter into one class and learn the basics while intermediate or advanced swimmers will go together and have more complex lessons.
A good swim class will teach you more than just swimming techniques. It should teach you water safety as well. As you progress with your ability to swim, you should also be learning how to safely enter and exit the water. If you are a parent, the instructor will make sure to teach you how to keep your child safe at all times too. Water safety is just as important as the ability to swim, itself!
When looking for a good swim class, you should pay attention to the instructor. A swimming instructor should both be able to teach a full class all at once while also keeping track of everyone to make sure they're safe. An instructor who can do both of these is a good instructor, indeed.
At Felix's Swim Classes in Toronto, we provide swim classes for all levels and ages. Read on to figure out which one fits you best!
Swimming Beginner Lessons
Our beginners classes focus on safety and basic techniques. You'll learn how to float in the water as well as methods to safely enter and exit it. You'd be surprised how dangerous it is for someone to go swimming with the basic safety knowledge. Far too many people have been injured by this lack of knowledge.
You'll learn simple strokes, allowing you to swim on your belly and your back. The instructors are trained to take their time on each lesson and repeat them often to embed the movement in your subconscious. This lets you learn to swim without needing to think about it too much.
The main focus is on self-sufficiency in the water. When you graduate from our beginners swimming class, you should know how to get in and out of the water on your own and survive in any water depth.
Our instructors also take the time to train you for emergencies if you find yourself swimming in a river or the ocean. There are times where the current can try to carry you away. Many people get hurt or even drown because of this danger. We will train you how to use the current to your own advantage and get back to the safety of dry land with it.
If you're already aware of how to swim, you'll likely fit into an intermediate or advanced class. In these classes, the focus is more on improving your strokes and confidence in the water. You will learn a variety of different strokes, allowing you a good method of swimming, regardless of the situation.
For intermediates, this will still include simple strokes. The main part of swimming that you won’t need any more practice at by this point is floating. Floating is the first and most important lesson on swimming as it keeps you alive if ever you find yourself in deep waters. If you don’t know anything about swimming, I would urge you to learn how to float so that you have a life-line of your own in case anything should go wrong.
The advanced swimming classes will contain only complicated strokes and focus mainly on building your physique to better swim. By improving your body in the water you will gain stamina and power to stay underwater for long and swim without getting tired so easily. Swimming is one of the best methods of exercise as it uses almost every single muscle in your body. Your heart and lungs will get stronger from regular swimming too!
Strokes such as the butterfly will be the sort of thing you may still be working on in advanced classes. The instructor will help you to perfect what you’ve already been learning for years. For the most part, you won’t need much assistance as you know plenty about swimming already. The goal of advanced class instructors is to bring you up to the same skill level as them. By the time you’ve learned everything they have to offer, you won’t need classes anymore. At that point, you’ll be free to swim however and wherever you want with the knowledge and confidence that you can take care of yourself now.
Customizable Swimming Lessons
When it comes to Felix’s swim school in Toronto, you’re not limited to a single location. For starters, we have several locations in Toronto, allowing you the ease of going to one nearby your home. Our group classes are set up to still be on the smaller side. (4 or 5 students for each instructor)
If you’re unable to get to one of our locations but you have a sizable pool at your home, we can also arrange for an instructor to go to your home. This can either be accomplished with a group class or 4-5 people or you can spend a bit more and get yourself some private classes. Whichever you choose, you’ll find that the ease of learning in your own home makes it worthwhile.
Most of our classes are between 30-60 minutes in length, depending on your availability and your swimming level. We can teach you everything from breaststroke to roll-over floating to the butterfly. Our classes are customizable in that you can make special requests to the instructors. This works best with private classes, but if a group requests a specific lesson or method of learning together, we will consider that too. So long as whatever you’ve requested is within the limits of your skill level, the instructor should go with it. If, however, you’re brand new to swimming and you ask to learn the butterfly technique, the instructor will advise you to learn some simpler techniques first as the butterfly is difficult even for intermediate swimmers.
Toronto Private Swimming Lessons
Some people prefer private lessons over learning in a class. One of the main reasons for this is if the individual has more difficulty coordinating their body in the water than others. Another reason could be a fear of water or shyness in a group.
If the swimmer is your child, I would recommend giving group classes a try first. The social advantage of learning in a group isn't something you should give up lightly. However, not everyone learns best in a group.
The obvious advantage of private classes is that the instructor can focus their full attention on you. You won't have to wait for everyone to figure out what the lesson is. The instructor will teach you directly and be able to devote the entire lesson to you.
Naturally, the above benefit comes at a cost. If you imagine how much an instructor can earn from a class of twenty in comparison to a class of one, you might get an idea of how expensive they are!
It's up to you to determine whether you or your child are better suited for group of private classes. So long as the instructor is good, either should work well. The main thing to determine is which works better than the other.
We offer both group and private classes here in Toronto. Our instructors have experience with various people who struggle with learning to swim. If you've been having difficulty with swimming, our private classes may be the perfect place for you!
What Precautions do We Take?
While I have said that everyone should learn to swim, we do take the necessary precautions to make sure that no harm comes to any of our students. There are special circumstances which can cause someone to be ineligible for a certain class or even swimming at all!
For example, one of the first things we ask about is your allergies. Our pools contain chlorine to keep germs and insects from infesting them. Chlorine poisons flies and mosquitos, as well as stopping germs from spreading between those swimming in the same pool.
Ordinarily, chlorine is harmless to people, but some are allergic to it. If you are, you may gain a rash or some form of irritation on the skin after swimming. If your chlorine allergy isn’t serious, then all that needs to be done is to pop in the shower right after a lesson. However, if you have a serious allergy, you should admit as much to us and we will discuss the possibility of alternate means of teaching you. (Such as your own pool, if you have one)
We also perform a fitness screening test before anyone is allowed to join a swimming class. If your level of fitness is below our required standards, we won’t accept you into our classes. The standard does not require you to be strong and fit, but if you are especially fragile, we may request that you build up your health before starting.
We also use our fitness test to help pair you up into the class best fit for you. While we mean no offense to anyone, it is a fact that those with a similar level of physical fitness will likely be able to withstand the same level of exertion during a class. The primary means of pairing you up is your swimming level, but physical fitness is a secondary means to place in the correct class at your skill level.
