Bath Time to Pool Time: Preparing Infants for Their First Swim Lesson
Introducing your baby to the water is an exciting milestone—and one that can set the foundation for a lifetime of water confidence. At Felix Swim Schools, we often hear from parents wondering how to prepare their infant for that very first swim lesson. The good news? You don’t have to wait for the pool to start building comfort.
It all begins in the bath.

Why Bath Time Matters
For most babies, the bathtub is their first experience with water outside the womb. This daily routine offers the perfect opportunity to gently introduce sensations, sounds, and movements they’ll encounter during swim class. By turning bath time into a mini “pre-swim” session, you can help your baby develop familiarity and trust—two key ingredients for a successful first swim lesson.
Start with a Calm, Positive Atmosphere
Make sure your baby is well-rested and fed (but not immediately after a feeding) before bath time. A relaxed baby is more receptive to new experiences. Play soft music, talk to them in a cheerful tone, and keep the water warm and soothing—similar to what they’ll experience in a professional swim setting.
Try These Simple Water Activities at Home:
1. Gentle Pouring
Use a soft cup or your hand to gently pour water over their body, especially over the shoulders and arms. As they get more comfortable, you can slowly pour water over their head. Use a cue like “1, 2, 3… splash!” to signal it’s coming. This mimics the gentle pouring used during swim class submersions.
2. Floating Support
With one arm supporting their head and neck, allow your baby to float on their back. Keep eye contact and smile. This simple motion helps them get used to water on their ears and encourages body awareness.
3. Splash and Kick
Encourage your baby to kick by gently moving their legs in the water. You can tap your hands on the surface and make splashing sounds to make it fun and interactive. These are the first steps to water movement.
4. Bubbles and Breath Control
If your baby is old enough to mimic, demonstrate blowing bubbles into the water. Even if they can’t do it yet, seeing and hearing you do it sets an example. Over time, this will help them understand breath control, a key element of swimming.
Use Consistent Swim Cues
Start using consistent verbal cues like “kick, kick!” or “float” during bath time. These same phrases will likely be used during lessons at Felix Swim Schools, so your baby will already associate them with water play. Repetition helps reinforce learning.
Monitor Comfort and Go Slow
If your baby shows signs of discomfort—such as fussing, shivering, or turning away—pause and try again later. Pushing too fast can create a negative association with water. Instead, let your baby lead the pace, gradually extending their comfort zone.
Bring Familiarity to the Pool
When it’s time for their first lesson, bring a bit of home comfort. A favorite bath toy, towel, or even a familiar song can ease the transition from bathtub to pool. At Felix Swim Schools, we welcome this kind of personalization and encourage parents to stay involved in early lessons to support bonding and trust.
Why Early Familiarity Leads to Success
Infants who have positive water experiences early on tend to adapt more easily to formal swim lessons. They’re more relaxed, more curious, and better able to focus. More importantly, they start building a sense of joy and confidence in the water—skills that will serve them for life.
