Protecting Our Pools, Protecting Our Kids: Why Toronto Parents Need to Speak Up

For over 40 years, Felix Swim Schools has been proud to serve families across Toronto by helping children learn how to swim — safely, confidently, and joyfully. But today, we’re facing a serious threat that could impact every family who relies on local swim programs: all 66 school pools in Toronto are at risk of closure, including 27 that are publicly permitted and used by swim schools like ours.

This isn’t just a facilities issue. It’s a parenting issue. It’s a safety issue. And it’s a community issue.

Why This Matters for Families

As parents, we all want our kids to feel confident and safe in the water. Swimming isn’t just a sport — it’s a life-saving skill. It teaches self-control, builds physical strength, and provides children with a healthy outlet to grow and thrive. For many families, school pools are the most accessible and affordable way to access these opportunities.

Now, due to budget cuts by the Government of Ontario and difficult decisions by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), these pools are on the chopping block. Without them, thousands of Toronto children will lose access to vital swim education, particularly in neighborhoods where private pools aren’t available nearby.

At Felix Swim Schools, we’ve seen firsthand how important consistency and accessibility are for young swimmers. Many of our programs — including Learn-to-Swim, Parent & Tot, Bronze certifications, and private lessons — rely on these school pools. If these spaces close, it will be more difficult for families to find local, high-quality swim instruction — and kids may miss out on critical water safety skills during key developmental years.
